The 8000 acres of Barkala farm is home to domesticated farm animals namely – some cows, goats, pigs and horses. Your children will love to explore all the animal yards, the cropping paddocks & the pretty gardens.

At Barkala Farm in Coonabarabran you will find is a unique combination of quaint Austrian /German style and Olde Australian style guesthouses. Soak up all of that rustic make-do atmosphere –  the unique guesthouses were hand hewn by a German family over 35 years ago. Blue Wren Café is to be foundon site and it serves delicious refreshments and snacks and even full meals too.

It is a quiet valley – step into another world -a world more tranquil, with the arty creative ambience of Pilliga Pottery. Its a bush property and a farm, craggy ridges and living ancient forest.

At Barkala dogs are just as welcome as you are too!

Gardens are filled with twittering birds, little hideaways places to sit and reflect. Little hidden pretty bird baths – artistic touches everywhere.

There are five guest accommodations here – all houses are pet-friendly, most are self-contained and you are able to self-cater, but they can also provide home-cooked fare for you, from traditional German dishes to gourmet wood-fired pizza.

First they offer Eagle Valley – it is two klms from their main homestead. Eagle Valley offers total seclusion. This large spacious house is made using of natural rock-walls, it has made use of straw bales, sandstone, and local timber… three large bedrooms offering hand-hewn beds and it can sleep up to 14 persons. It also has a fully-equipped kitchen, a wood-cooking stove (all your wood is supplied) and a warm lounge room for the evening.

The Old Schoolhouse has been fully renewed with artistic touches to suit its special charm. It sleeps 6 people, and it has a kitchenette, a w/c, shower and an outside BBQ too for guests to use. Air-conditioning too.

The Studio was once the original hand-throwing pottery shop at Pilliga Pottery, and was one of the first mud brick structures they made. The Studio sleeps 15 persons and is self-contained, with a full kitchen with all the implements and equipment you need, as well as a bathroom and a second toilet.  After many additions and now a full renovation, it is now open – offering large families or groups a comfortable place to stay. The Studio is a spacious and has a friendly feeling, it is directly adjacent to Pilliga Pottery but set in its own garden for privacy.

The Poets Cottage is a quiet and inspiring retreat. This spacious mud brick cottage simply breathes ‘yesteryear’. Sleep in with birdsong enveloping, or spend the evening reading by your own woodfire, then when you retire stargaze through a skylight just above your bed! Poets Cottage accommodates 6 and it is also self-catering, with a country kitchen, a large bathroom, a campfire area out back, and a BBQ at the front.

The Farmhouse This distinctly European-styled building offers budget accommodation with shared amenities. Four family rooms open onto a shared verandah – with expansive views over the farm paddocks and then out onto the surrounding hills. Each room is rented separately and each has a television and all the furniture in these rooms are hand-built from local timbers. There are two share toilets and a shared bathroom too situated upon the open verandah.

The verandah is a place to chill out, and just take in the rural view.

There is also a communal refrigerator and coffee making facilities for your convenience. Guests here can either bring their own food, and then enjoy it out on the verandah, or anywhere outdoors even picnicking along one of the walking tracks.

There are unexpected arty highlights wherever you turn on this unique outback property.
